Vol.1 contains material on ships, marine engines etc; vol.2 contains material on stationary engines and boilers, railways and locomotives, machine tools etc. Volume 7, diary of a tour by Field in 1821 through the manufacturing districts of the Midlands, was transcribed for the Transactions of the Newcomen Society vols. 6 & 13.
