Plate 8 of a series of aquatints of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, titled 'Railway Office, Liverpool'. It was engraved by S.G. Hughes, after an image by Thomas Talbot Bury, and was published by R. Ackermann, London, 1831.
The Crown Street railway station in Liverpool was an elegant building as can be seen in this print. There were no raised platforms, so people had to climb up into the carriages.
The number of passengers travelling on the railway were soon too much for Crown Street and it closed to passenger traffic in 1836 with a new station opening at Lime Street. It had only been in use for six years.
