One postcard depicting French aviator Louis Paulhan flying over Watford during his prize-winning flight from London to Manchester on the 27th April 1910. The London to Manchester flight was a competition sponsored by the Daily Mail newspaper. It was the first long-distance aeroplane race in Britain, with a prize of £10,000 for the winner. The postcard features a photograph taken by Frederick Downer of Watford.
The postcard was sent by Solomon of Addleston, Surrey to Miss A (Kelly) Macey of Lyndhurst, Hampshire, postmarked 9 May 1910. The writer refers to the sudden death of Edward VII, and his plans to take up flying.
