Four balances bear the name 'L. Oertling, London'. The Oertling firm made chemical assay and bullion balances and was hydrometer maker to the Inland Revenue.

The box bears the name 'Geo. Owen, Smethwick'. George Owen was the chief inspector of weights and measures for the borough of Smethwick and member of the executive council of the Incorporated Society of Inspectors of Weights and Measures.
