My dear Romilly,
A married lady
writes four pages to ask for my
[illegible] autograph!! Tell her to
employ[?] [illegible] letter. Because
she has married your cousin
is [illegible] why she should
[illegible] me out of my hand.
Besides I never mean
to offer my hand to any
but an unmarried woman.
As for the lady, I fear there
is no help for her [illegible] she
[line illegible]
after scrawling hand; [illegible]
p.2
tell him to [illegible] over the
following words of the Son of Sirach
“He that getteth a wife be
ginneth to thrive – he hath
a help like unto himself, &
a pillar of rest – Where no
hedge is there the possession is
spoiled: & he that hath no
wife will wander up & down
mourning.” Let him read
this & be happy – and as for
the Lady let her read as
follows “Be not curious in
unnecessary matters.”
I [illegible] no more at present
from your perplexed friend
A Sedgwick
