Robert Barton inherited his grandfather's 'Dividing Machine' in 1878. He worked out the method of ruling and was awarded a first prize for his rulings at Melbourne Exhibition. The notes include a description and experiments made over fifteen years, including work (1880) for Melbourne Exhibition.
