The diary describes a sightseeing holiday during which Sharrock and a friend travelled through North Wales from Chester to Bangor on the new Chester and Holyhead Railway. The railway itself and the local industries surrounding it are described in vivid detail, it includes descriptions of the Conway Bridge, the Britannia Bridge (in an incomplete state) and of the Penrhyn slate quarries.
