Apprentice's notebook relating to naval architecture and marine engineering. Bears on front cover 'E.W. White, Cleveland Rd., Southsea'; inside cover bears stamp of 'H.M. Dockyard School, Portsmouth. 21 Sep. 1911'. The notebook contiains neat, detailed notes taken from lectures and/or textbooks. Profusely illustrated, with other notes and drawings tipped in (now in separate slipcase). Stages 1, 2 and 3 are referred to. Stage 1 (20 Sept 1911) includes Tests of Materials (treatment of mild steel; annealing; steel, iron, brass, alloys); Facilities of Construction (blocks; rivetting; keels; working O.B. plating). Stage 2 (29 Sept 1913) includes Materials; Rivets and rivetting; Keels, keelsons etc; Web frames; Construction of bulkheads. Stage 3 (25 Sept 1919) includes Scrieve board; Floor plates; Steering gears; Anchor and cable arrangements; Marine refrigeration; Masts. At back are a few pages on 'Naval Theor[etica]l' re Simpson's rules
