The manuscripts give descriptions and illustrations of scientific instruments and apparatus commissioned by King George III and produced by George Adams, and outline the experiments for which they were designed. Adams kept explanations of the physical principles being demonstrated to a minimum, but provided references to printed works where further information was available. The collection comprises an (incomplete) manuscript describing the apparatus, accompanied by rough plates of drawings known as Adams’ ‘Instructions to the illustrator’.
