Collection of books, pamphlets & leaflets relating to food and nutrition

A collection of books and leaflets that chronicle some of the changes in approach to food and nutrition in 20th century Britain, spanning c.1933-1986. Although by no means comprehensive, the collection spans several decades and includes a notable group of WW2 Ministry of Food leaflets, books on vegetarian and vegan cooking from the 1940s and cookbooks aimed specifically at single people and those who may well have been using gas and electricity for the first time in their new post-war housing. In part, the books and leaflets were intended to provide opportunities for the reader to improve and broaden their diets, but many were also written with the intention of informing the public about good basic nutrition and – in the case of the wartime material – persuading the public through propaganda to adopt particular eating habits at a time of food rationing and shortages. The collection carries even greater significance as all of the material was donated by Dr Louise Davies who played a major role in the dissemination of nutritional information to the general public for many years.
