This collection relates to the business activities of Thornton Film Company Ltd, a photographic manufacturing company which operated in the late 19th and early 20th century and was led by John Edward Thornton (manufacturer) and Charles Frederick Rothwell (chemist).
The collection contains materials relating largely to Thornton Film Company Ltd, but there are also some materials relating to Thornton Flexoid Papers Ltd, Flexoid Syndicate Ltd, Pegamoid Ltd and Thornton Ltd. It includes a large amount of business correspondence relating to legal disputes, relocation of the firm's premises, patents, job vacancies, shares and finances. Other business materials in the collection include meeting minutes, notices, policy documents, reports and financial statements. There are a small amount of promotional materials relating to Thornton Film Company products.
The collection also contains two photograph albums containing family photographs, possibly those of John Edward Thornton.
