The John H. Hammond Archive

This archive splits into various donations to the Science Museum made by Hammond during his life, and bequeathed to the Museum in his will. The contents of the archive relate to Hammond’s research, notes and drafts for his 2 books “The Camera Obscura: A Chronicle” (1981) and “The Camera Lucida in Art and Science” (1987) and a third book with remained unfinished at his time of death, “Mechanical Aids for Drawing”.

The materials in this archive consist of photocopies of reading materials relevant to these areas, reading lists, images used for illustration, typescripts, notes, promotional materials such as adverts for Camera Obscura and Camera Lucida, and drafts of Hammond’s two published works.
