Drafts of a paper on the construction of the Disley Tunnel dealing with the technical details of tunnelling. Comprising of 41 hand-written leaves with 18 photographs of the New Mills - Heaton Mersey branch nearing completion, 1899, written by G. S. F. Rutty. The Disley tunnel was built in 1902 on the New Mills to Heaton Mersey branch of the Midland Railway. It was the most expensive work on the line and at 2 miles, 346 yards (3,535 m), the second longest tunnel on the Midland system.
