This sub-fonds contains 158 original daguerreotypes and their original purpose built cabinet assembled by Alexander John Ellis and taken by or under his direction. There are also daguerreotypes taken by Achille Morelli and Lorenzo Suscipi. The daguerreotypes are of topographic and architectural views of Italy and consist of 103 views of Rome; 11 views of Prestum; 8 views of Pompei; 2 views of Pozznola; 3 views of Florence; 9 views of Naples; 7 views of Pisa; 15 views of Venice.

Accompanying the daguerreotypes are Alexander John Ellis’s original handwritten notes which detail the date, location and conditions from 1841. This box also contains some of the original backs that have been removed for conservation work.
