A notebook containing notes written by Joseph Clement to form a credo as a statement of intent and moral compass. It contains passages of a religious nature, including many from Hugh Blair's 'Sermons', as well as many giving advice to youth. These have been copied into the book by hand and not relate to the machine building or precision engineering he would become known for but rather is made up of short reflective essays of a moral nature. There are also examples of a signature being practiced. The book is divided in to two section the first being dated 1793, when Clement was around 14, and the second 1798, when he was 19 and working as a thatcher.
