A photograph album containing images of the millwright’s workshop of the England family in Ludham, Norfolk. These were taken by Hallam Ashley (1900-1987) and show the workshop around Christmas 1932. The images show the interior of the workshop including the tools and equipment in use at the time and illustrate the traditional methods used in such a workshop as well as the variety of work undertaken. In addition to this the final image in the album shows a pair of impeller turbine drums that were used to pump water in many of the surround wind pumps, which were found to be more efficient than other means and could also be adapted to work under steam power. The first photograph appears to show the millwright at the time, Edwin William Daniel England (1850-1933) who had taken over the business from his father Daniel Chesney England (1823-1897), known as Dan England. The England family were millwrights in the village for several generations and were responsible for many of the windmill and pumps in the surrounding area.
