Photo entitled 'Stanhope Calculating Machine'
A photograph of Science Museum object 1905-108 with a caption that states: S.M. 49. Stanhope Calculating Machine, 1775. This was made by Jas. Bullock in 1775 for Viscount Mahon, afterwards thrid Earl Stanhope. Multiplication is performed by repeated addition, and division by repeated subtraction. A complete cycle, (corresponding with one turn of the handle of a Thomas de Colmar arithometer) is effected by moving the sliding rectangular frame to and from the operator. E1 - 1905.
