A photograph of Science Museum objects 1872-137 and 1905-148 with a caption that states: 'S.M. 50. Stanhope calculating machine, 1777. This was made by Jas. Bullock in 1777 for Viscount Mahon, afterwards third Earl Stanhope. The to-and-fro motion in the 1775 machine is replaced by rotation. Before photographing, the instrument was taken out of its box, and the top plate displaced so as to show some of the construction. A trail-piece for this machine is shown on the left.
