My Lord

The sum of £500 advanced to me by the
Treasury under your Lordships recommendation to
enable me [?] of the Council of the Royal Society to assist
the Astronomer Royal to furnish the [illegible] required
by the House of Commons relative to the length of the
Seconds Pendulum, The Trigonometrical Survey [illegible, possibly symbols]
is now nearly or rather quite [illegible], I have paid to
Capt Kater who has [illegible] the Pendulum required
£148.11. being the cost of the materials [illegible] workmanship
to Mr Pond £115 for expenses incurred by him [illegible] to Dr Young
£3G. [illegible] being the cost of his attempt to [illegible] the
Pendulum required the Remainder of the £500 is pledged [?]
For Payment of the French Artists who have under the
superintendence of the Royal Institute of France [?]
furnishes us with the measure of the metre set out on
[illegible] the most proper [illegible] for the purpose
tho the most costly next to Gold.

I have been fortunate enough to engage Capt
Kater to undertake the examination of the Trigonometrical
Survey without any view of emolument to himself on
condition that his expenses are borne which he has
contrived to make as little expensive as possible.

The instruments proposed for this undertaking
will I conclude cost about £300. [illegible] the Survey cannot be
estimated at less than £200 as the Line of Survey reaches
from Shetland to the Isle of Wight.

I shall therefore be much obliged to your
Lordship if you will recommend an Issue to me of
£500 more which I trust will enable me to bear the
charges of the [illegible] in hand [illegible] to [illegible] whole
without much further charge

I hope that your Lordship has reconsidered
Capt. Katers request for [illegible] which he explained at

Length in a letter to me which I put into the hands
of Mr Hobhouse [illegible] also that application has been
made for the use of 4 Artillery horses [illegible] two drivers to
render the [illegible] of Horses unnecessary
