at 11 – dined at ½ past one and waited upon the Income Tax commissioners at 3, sitting at Thomas Bowes’s office relative [struck through] hearing appeal against the assessment made upon persons for the [struck through] last year – stated our [struck through] the grounds of appeal and answered several disagreeable questions – our return was at length [struck through] accepted.

3rd day 28/11mo. Rose between 7 and 8 – after breakfasting went to business – went by the 9.30 train to Shildon to see the managers of the Engine Works – met with O Gilkes at the Station – stated my errand and afterwards walked over the Incline plane,

thence by way of the new branch from Black Boy on to Auckland and Weardale Railway to South Church Station – returned at 11 - occupied in the afternoon with weighing off a quantity of Iron Keys for the above named railway - took tea at ¼ past Six and spent the evening in reading.

4th day 29th Spent in looking after business – in the evening attended a Committee Meeting of the Mechanics Library myself in the Chair – after the minutes of last meeting were read and considered
