Records of the West of India Portuguese Guaranteed Railway Company
This collection comprises of a set of papers in connection with the building of the Goa Railway by the West of India Portuguese Guaranteed Railway Company. This was a British-backed railway enterprise undertaken on behalf of the Portuguese government in India, which wanted a railway to connect across the border with British India at Castle Rock to help stimulate the Goan economy.
The archive contains correspondence with governments and a minute book. The minute book starts with the inaugural meeting of the shareholders in the West of India Portuguese Guaranteed Railway Company chaired by the Duke of Sutherland at Dunrobin Castle on 24th September 1879. There are also two files of ‘verbatim’ manuscript annual reports from 1882 – 1940.
