Mummified body, encased in basket made of rope, Peru, 1401-1800

Made:
1401-1800 in Peru

Mummified body, encased in basket made of rope, Peruvian, possibly central or north coast or central highlands, 1401-1800

This preserved body is encased in a basket-like container made of thick coiled rope, with a round opening to reveal the face of the deceased. The body has been wrapped in textiles that can be seen through the holes in the basket.

The catalogue card records no provenance, so we are unsure how and when the body entered Henry Wellcome's collection.
