Bottle of water from the river Jordan, collected in 1881 by George Armstrong

Contained in this glass bottle is water collected from the River Jordan, the site were Jesus Christ was believed to have been be baptised by John the Baptist. The account is recorded in the New Testament of the Bible.

Pilgrims visiting this holy area will often collect samples of the water – for its perceived medicinal and health-giving qualities and as a souvenir of their pilgrimage.
