Shop round, glass-fronted label LITHII CIT: (Lithium Citrate), some white crystalline powder, English, 1850-1920
The label ‘LITHII CIT’ etched into the side of this clear glass bottle is an abbreviation of Lithium Citrate. These bottles were known as shop rounds. Pharmacies in the 1800s used them to store liquid preparations. Lithium citrate is a drug now used to treat psychiatric disorders such as bipolar and acute depression. Lithium citrate was found in some soft drinks during the early 1900s. Its qualities as a mood stabiliser have been known for years.
