This piece of equipment is used in a laboratory to analyse blood gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide as well as pH levels. Arterial blood pH is normally around 7.4. If a person’s blood is acidic (below pH 7), this indicates that the body is not taking up enough oxygen. Using automated machines in laboratory work reduces the chances of human error and is also faster. The unit was donated by the Physiological Society, which was set up in 1876 in England to study how the body works. Today, the Physiological Society draws members from fifty countries around the world.
