Hand-driven zonophone, c. 1900. With oak case. Screwed-on label reads: "Zon-o-phone / Patented / Sole rights for Great Britain + Ireland / Nicole Freres, Ltd, London E.C." Consists of turntable, handle with internal thread, horn and attached mounting bracket, soundbox, body. Hand-driven gramophone-type talking machine with two-weight governer and speed control. Repainted and sandbox refurbished etc in 1977.
The "Baby" Zonophone was a record player especially designed so that it could be hand turned by children. The hand-powered motor had a governer so that the record turned at a single speed. It was advertised as being "designed for those who require a moderately priced Machine, which will give a good clear reproduction."
