Early 20th century cane cage, for supporting blanket above legs

A blanket support is used to protect an injured part of the body from the pressure of sheets and blankets when recovering in bed. This was to ease the discomfort and pain the patient felt. Blanket supports remain common features of numerous hospital wards. This simple example is made from wood and cane. Today, blanket supports are generally made from metal.
