Oblong wooden collecting box for the British College of Nurses Benevolent Fund, 1926-1950

It had long been acknowledged that nursing was a poorly paid profession and collecting boxes such as this one were not uncommon. Voluntary contributions would be re-distributed to nurses at the British College of Nursing who faced financial hardship, as well as to former nurses unable to work because of illness.
