Model of a First World War Red Cross travelling operating theatre, English, unknown maker, made between 1914-1968.
This is a model of a First World War Red Cross mobile operating theatre. It shows how vehicles were modifed during the First World War by organisations like the Red Cross Society, to carry out emergency operations close to the front line during the conflict, perhaps en route to a field hospital. Inside the model truck, a range of miniature equipment and provisions, including an operating table, stores for water and medicines and cupboards for surgical instruments are represented. A specialised vehicle like this was a great innovation compared to what had been available in previous conflicts.
