Rocking cradle, oak and pine, Europe, 1750-1850

This simple rocking cradle is made of oak and pine and is believed to be of European origin. There is a rocking handle at each corner. Four wooden studs are on each side around which a restraining band was wrapped. This kept the child secure within the cradle and stopped them crawling out. A socket on each side at the head end accommodated a 'cradle guard', which was a hooded covering.
