British Red Cross Society metal gilt medal, in original box, awarded for war service in First World War, 1914-1918, made by J.R. Gaunt & Son

The British Red Cross Society Medal was given to members of the British Red Cross and Voluntary Aid Detachment nurses who volunteered for one year or 1,000 hours of service during the First World War and did not receive a British War Medal. The medal was only to be worn on a Red Cross uniform. Made from bronze gilt, the Latin inscription on the medal translates as “Admist the arms, love”. The medal was made by Gaunt, specialist medal makers.
