Many organic compounds containing nitrogen will produce ammonia when they are heated with soda-lime. In Will and Varrentrapp's method the ammonia is absorbed in dilute hydrochloric acid contained in the nitrogen bulb. Platinic chloride is added and the ammonia may be determined from the weight of the resulting precipitate of ammonium chloroplatinate. This method is not applicable to certain nitrogen-containing compounds and has been superseded by Kjeldahl's method.
