False right leg, military issue, English, 1914-1918

Each of the 41,000 British servicemen who lost a limb during the First World War were entitled to a prosthetic replacement. Made from wood with leather strapping for the thigh, the leg can bend at the knee or be locked into a straight position. The person wearing the prosthetic limb would have needed support or crutches to move around.
