Chinese wooden shop sign, probably from a pharmacy, 18th-19th century. Decoration includes chinese characters below the face of a toothed dragon or cat figure.
Shop signs such as this one were hung outside pharmacies selling traditional Chinese remedies. This example shows Chinese writing beneath a ferocious-looking animal. This shop sign was sent from Hong Kong to the Church Mission Department in Bristol.
