C20 gilt-painted signboard displaying presidents of the British Phrenological Society from 1886-1965, English

This signboard lists the presidents of the British Phrenological Society from its foundation in 1886 to 1965. The society’s first woman president was elected in 1924. Phrenology was popular in the 1800s. There were over 200 phrenologists active in Britain in the first half of that century. However, the medical profession found it controversial and denounced the phrenologists’ claims as unfounded. The British Phrenological Society disbanded in 1967.
