'Mobaltron 10000' cobalt teletherapy machine for radiotherapy, unsigned, England, United Kingdom, 1960-1970

A massive shield protects both the patient and the operators against dangerous overdoses from the radioactive cobalt at the core of this machine. Called the ‘Mobaltron 1000’, it was used for a type of radiotherapy called teletherapy, in which doses of radiation are given at a distance from the patient.

Radiotherapy is used to kill cancerous cells in the body and prevent them from spreading. This machine was used at the Royal Free Hospital, London before they donated the machine to the Science Museum’s collections in 1979.
