Folding canvas and metal stretcher, with canvas painted with words indicating that it was 'captured' near Fricourt, France on the 1st July 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, by the 9th King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, made for the German army, 1901-1916.

The opening day of the Battle of the Somme, on 1 July 1916, was the costliest ever experienced by the British Army. From 7.30 that morning, waves of Allied infantry left their trenches to attack German lines across a broad front. Within the space of a few hours British casualties numbered over 57,000, of which nearly 20,000 were killed.

The 9th King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry attacked near the French village of Fricourt. After advancing under heavy fire this stretcher was ‘captured’, probably along with other supplies, from a German front store or first aid post. This event is recorded in wording painted on the stretcher canvas, as is the plan to forward it to the infantry unit’s home depot in Pontefract, west Yorkshire. Casualties for this unit were extremely high on 1st July. Of around 800 men, well over half were killed or wounded.

This object was displayed in the Science Museum as part of the exhibition, Wounded: Conflict, Casualties and Care which ran from 2016-2018.
