Produced for the German air force, the kit would have been carried by airmen for the treatment of burns and other injuries during the First World War, The canvas pannier was easy to carry and contains several different types of dressings plus instructions for their use. The kit was made by Fredrich Gunter & Co, based in Hamburg.
Of the many warring nations engaged in the conflict, the German air force was the only one to offer parachutes to its aircrews.
