Craig counter current distribution apparatus with 70 glass components, used to separate compounds within liquids, used at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology at Oxford University, 1940-1960

This laboratory apparatus is used to carry out an analytical chemistry technique called counter current distribution, which is used to separate compounds within liquids. It is a technique and piece of apparatus that became crucial to the purification of drugs including penicillin and other antibiotics, antimalarials, as well as hormones and vitamins from the 1940s.

During the Second World war, American biochemist Lyman C. Craig, and Otto Post, a machinist and glassblower, designed the equipment and technique whilst working at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research.

This apparatus was used at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology at Oxford University, and was likely used in research to purify and identify antibiotics during the 1940s and 1950s. Led by Sir Howard Florey, scientists at the institute pioneered the development of penicillin and demonstrated how effective it could be against bacterial infections.

The apparatus worked by means of an ingenious arrangement of glass tubes within a tilting frame. On repeated tilts, shakes, and settling times, heavier liquid parts remained stationary while the lighter parts transferred stepwise from one tube to the next, ultimately isolating pure components in the mixture at the end of the cycle. Some compounds can be separated by a few transfers while others require hundreds of cycles.
