Perimeter, wooden table with metal fittings, by Priestley Smith of England, with eye charts, by Curry and Paxton, English, 1880-1900

Opticians used the table-mounted perimeter to check and measure a patient’s peripheral vision - meaning, the detection of objects at the very edge of their field of view. This perimeter is mounted permanently on a specially shaped table. There is space for the patient to get close and it is fitted with an adjustable chin rest for the patient. Once in position, the patient focuses on a ‘target’ to ensure an accurate result.

Peripheral vision loss can be a symptom of many conditions of the eye and other parts of the body.
