Optometer on pillar stand with 38 lenses

Optometrists are trained to examine eyes and to prescribe visual aids, such as spectacles. This piece of equipment is called an optometer and has 38 rotating trial lenses on a stand. The patient was tested with each lens to determine the strength of spectacles required.
