Token, copper, 28mm diameter. Brimscombe Port halfpenny, 1795. (DH Glos 60). Issuer The Thames and Severn Canal Co., 1795, ½d. Obverse Barge sailing (a Severn trow): ‘Thames and Severn Canal, 1795’. Reverse Entrance to the Sapperton Tunnel. Notes Canal building was a major industry in the late 18th century. The Thames and Severn canal linked the Severn at Wallbridge near Stroud with the Thames near Lechlade. The total length, including a branch to Cirencester, was about 30 miles. The Sapperton Tunnel was nearly two and a half miles in length and an engineering feat.
