Token, copper, 28mm diameter. Middlesex token, payable in Ireland, anti-slavery. (DH Mddx 1038). Issuer: Probably the Society for the Suppression of the Slave Trade, late 18th century. Obverse: a black person in chains, likely an African man (originally described "Negro"), kneeling in supplication: ‘Am I not a man and a brother’. Reverse Two hands clasped: ‘May slavery and oppression cease throughout the world’. Notes The design of the kneeling enslaved man was done by Hackwood for Josiah Wedgwood who issued ceramic ware bearing the design.
