Token, copper, 28mm diameter. Gatehouse halfpenny, 1793. (DH Kirkcud 1). Reverse, large factory, 26 windows and two smoking chimneys. Issuer Thos. Scott & Co., 1793, ½d. Obverse Griffin crest: ‘Impero’, Gatehouse Halfpenny’. Reverse Large building (presumably the cotton mill). ‘Payable at the house of Thos. Scott & Co.’ Notes Thos. Scott & Co. were cotton manufacturers in Gatehouse, a village five miles from Kirkcudbright. The rate of growth of the village was such that only two years after the issue of the token, it was made a burgh.
