Sheffield penny token, 1812.
Token, copper, 34mm diameter. Sheffield penny, 1812. (D Yorks 137). Issuer S Hobson & Sons, 1812, 1d. Obverse Eight arrows in saltire formation surmounted by a cherub’s face and wings and ‘Sheffield’: ‘Payable at S Hobson & Sons, Button manufacturers’. Reverse Britannia seated, looking left with olive branch, trident, union shield and a small ship (bottom left), ‘One penny token 1812’. Notes The obverse design is that of the ‘Town’s Trust’ or ‘Sheffield Free Tenants’. Note how closely the reverse side Britannia resembles the one on the regal 1797 penny.
