Large wooden tobacco pipe bowl carved with a model of Cologne Cathedral, Europe, 1860-1900

Large wooden tobacco pipe bowl with carving of Cologne Cathedral on front in high relief, hinged metal bowl cover, with ornately carved reservoir, "Dom Zu Coln" covered in shield on front, Cologne(?) Germany, 1860-1900

A model of Cologne Cathedral in Germany has been intricately carved into this large wooden tobacco pipe bowl.

Tobacco pipe bowls come in a range of designs, from the simple to, as here, the highly extravagant. Such outlandish and impractical bowls are likely to have been given as gifts or perhaps as souvenirs. (Pictured here with two other tobacco pipe bowls, A14527 and A14868).
