Model of a spherical rag boiler by Donkin and Co, Ltd.
Rag boilers were used in the papermaking industry in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, to boil rags in an alkaline solution to remove dirt and impurities. This was part of a multi-stage process of cleaning which reduced rags down to clean fibres which could then form part of the pulp used to make paper.
