Combined dilator and pulmonary valvulotome

Combined dilator and pulmonary valvulotome, with metal handle, made by Genito-Urinary Co., London, 1945-1955
A valvulotome is an instrument for cutting a valve. This example was developed to cut open valves in the heart that have become closed and constricted due to infection or illness. This condition is known medically as stenosis. The condition can be caused by malformation of the foetus during pregnancy or infections that affect heart valves, such as rheumatic fever.
Made by the Genito-Urinary Manufactureing Co Ltd, this valvulotome is combined with a dilator, which will further open up the restricted valve. Scratched into the side are the words 'GUYS THEATRE' indicating the valvulotome belonged to the operating theatre of Guy’s Hospital in London, England.
