Mortar board made by Ede, Son and Ravenscroft, London, belonging to Louisa Aldrich-Blake (1865-1925). After studying at the London (later the Royal Free Hospital) Medical School for women, she attained her MB in 1892, and in 1895 was awarded a master's degree in surgery. In 1925 she was made a Dame of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of her services to surgery and the medical education of women - only the second woman to have been honoured in this way.
