The drill was presented to Richard Batten (orthopaedic surgeon, Birmingham) by Martin Allgower (orthopaedic surgeon, Switzerland) in about 1967. Richard Batten introduced the AO (Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesis fragen - Association for the Study of Internal Fixation) surgical technique in the UK.
